CSX - Former Conrail 2000 - 2013

In the summer of 1999, CSX and Norfolk Southern acquired and divided Conrail between them. CSX thereby became one of the two goliath railroads serving the Port of New York/New Jersey and the Boston area.

July 2010. A northbound CSX intermodal train hammers east through South Plainfield, NJ on Track 1 of the "shared assets" portion of the ex-Conrail, nee Lehigh Valley main line. Two "ex-Con" SD60Ms, both painted in the latest colors of their new owner, lead the charge.

Twenty years after Conrail made the short-sighted and stupid decision to rip up Track 1 between the Potter interlocking in Edison, NJ and Port Reading Junction in Manville, NJ, thereby creating a 10-mile bottleneck on its primary freight route into the Port of New York/New Jersey, its successors, CSX and Norfolk Southern, rebuilt it. A good deal of "left hand" running takes place on the "shared assets" portion of the ex-Lehigh Valley since Track 1 was rebuilt.

September 2010. A westbound CSX unit train of empty ethanol tank cars rumbles north across the Popolopen Creek trestle at Bear Mountain, NY on CSX's ex-Conrail, nee Penn Central, nee New York Central main line along the west shore of the Hudson River. ES40DC 5245 and "SD40-2" 8435 (a rebuilt/upgraded SD40 that was originally delivered to the B&O in May 1967) provide the power.
